YALI NETWORK ANAMBRA EMBARKS ON COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT TO COMMEMORATE MANDELA DAY

                         The  'Make-A-Family-Happy' Project

(A #YALIServes Community Service Activity of YALI Network Anambra) on Wednesday 18th July 2018.

Life well spent is one lived for the good of others. To be a channel of blessing, a ray of light & hope, a source of inspiration to people is part of what births the change our society needs. The family is the smallest unit of the society. Touching a family directly impacts the society.

In commemoration of the Nelson Mandela’s Day and in the spirit of volunteerism, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Anambra - the trail-blazing YALI Network in Nigeria - engaged in a ‘MAKE-A-FAMILY-HAPPY’ Project on Wednesday 18th of July.

The chosen family is made up of a widow with five children living with her mother and cousin in one of the slums in the city of Onitsha. Struggling to eke out a living without a stable source of income and many mouths to feed, the first two children have already been introduced to the business of hawking.

Formal education for the other 2 kids lasts till the school fees drive or exams begin as there was no money for schools fees foe them. Of heartbreaking notice was that one of the kids (not up to 5 years)  is deaf and dumb, and in serious need of special attention which has not been available due to the circumstances.

YALI Anambra team visited the family on Wednesday July 18, and in groups provided needed help as much as possible to the grateful family. The team worked vigorously and with passion.

The surroundings which was very dirty was first cleaned up. The exterior part of their house was painted. Simultaneously another group cleaned up the inside of her house which entailed scraping the wall, painting the room, putting a carpet on the floor and arranging the little items she had.

The kids were given a needed bath and thereafter, we proceeded to teach them the education basics of knowing alphabets and numbers; how to  spell & write their names - for the two older children. A basic sexual & drug abuse orientation was also given to the kids.

The YALI Team also presented some food items to the family, sanitary items (such as soap and detergent), as well as children’s clothes. YALI Anambra also went further to make a promise to the family to provide formal basic education for  the kids and also enroll the deaf and dumb child in a special school.

We also found out that the young mother & her kids have in the past been subject to abuse by some young men of questionable character in the neighbourhood. The Network’s contact numbers and an instruction was left with her to call on us in the event of a repeat of any form of abuse on her or her kids.

It was an emotional time at the end, as the family was filled with gratitude which they expressed with words and actions. They never expected such show of kindness to them. The volunteer activities drew the attention of some neighbours and well wishers.

The Day ended with a little orientation about what the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is, a vote of thanks to all who contributed and volunteered for the project, a light refreshment and short prayer.

The SDG Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 4 (Quality Education) were atleast, addressed through this activity.

Thanks to YALI Anambra.

At YALI, we believe that we can also impact our communities through volunteerism and commitment to humanitarian services, such as we did, and we ended up making a family happy.
