Mr. Patrick Igho, the Bursar of the Delta College of Education, Warri, Delta State, was arrested by the TAX enforcement officials from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Abuja, over Withholding Tax (WHT) and unpaid Value Added Tariff (VAT) of the sum of N49 million owed by the institution.
In an effort to get the college to pay the debt, Mr. Eze Chimaobi, the Delta State monitor, held a meeting with the Acting Provost, Dr. Mrs. H. O. Oniyama, the bursar and the Accountant, the Acting Provost insisted that the college had no fund.
Although, the FIRS officials pleaded with them to at least make a commitment and pay some amount from the enormous amount of money owed by the College, but Oniyama said only the functional provost, who was away, could approve any payment.
When the Provost, Dr. Sylvester s. Ebisine, was contacted, he said that the college would not pay the money and that they could go ahead and close down the institution.
The FIRS officials got angry by this remark, they arrested the Bursar and took him to Abuja.
