UNILAG Team Wins Lagos Inventergy Competition 2014

A team of scientist and technologists from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has won the Lagos Inventergy Competition 2014 which was formed as part of events that took place during the October 2014 Energy Conservation Awareness Month of Lagos State.
An initiative of the Lagos State Electricity Board (LSEB), the main objective of the competition is to challenge young citizens to design and develop efficient and cost-effective energy systems. It consists of two (2) formats: Product Design and Development, to gauge the participants understanding of the concept of “Conserve Energy, Save Money”.
With the name: Lighting Gurus UNILAG, the team comprised: Yewande Morris who served as the team’s Programmer; Igwe Chima, the team’s Designer and Abraham Obaro, the Manager of the team.
The Lighting Gurus UNILAG won the grand prize of N1.5 million (one million and five hundred thousand naira) after their creation, the Slight Con (Smart Light Control), was adjudged the best by a panel of jurors which included experts in fields such as Energy, Finance, Engineering and Information Communication Technology.
The Slight Con is a device that helps to reduce the consumption of electricity by electric lights in the home. With the aid of sensors, the lights in homes equipped with Slight Con will only switch on or off, automatically, when people walk in or out.
The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university community, congratulates and wishes the team continued success in future endeavours.
